Things people often ask.
If your question isn't here, just send it over — I'll answer anything practical before we meet.
Getting Started
Do you offer a free consultation?
Yes. I offer a complimentary 15-minute phone or video call for all prospective clients. This gives us a chance to see if we're a good fit, discuss what brings you in, and answer any questions before committing to a first session. There is no obligation.
How do I schedule an appointment?
You can reach out through the contact form on this site, by email at douglascarmody@nowandzenwellness.com, or by calling (656) 789-3112. I typically respond within one business day to all inquiries.
What should I expect from my first session?
The first session is primarily about getting to know each other. I'll ask about what brought you in, your history, and your goals. You don't need to have everything figured out — just show up and we'll go from there. It typically takes 2–3 sessions to really settle into the work.
Are you accepting new clients?
Yes, I am currently welcoming new clients for both in-person and telehealth appointments. Availability varies — reach out to check current openings.
Logistics & Scheduling
Where are you located?
My office is at 14021 N Dale Mabry Hwy, Tampa, FL 33618. I also offer telehealth appointments for clients anywhere in Florida via a HIPAA-compliant video platform.
What are your office hours?
I see clients Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Some evening appointments may be available — ask when you reach out.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask for 24 hours' notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice may be charged the full session fee. I understand emergencies happen — just communicate with me.
How long are sessions?
Standard individual and couples sessions are 50 minutes. EMDR sessions are typically 60–90 minutes to allow for complete processing. The first session may run slightly longer.
How often will we meet?
Most clients begin with weekly sessions to build momentum. Over time, many move to bi-weekly as they make progress. Frequency is always adjusted based on your needs and goals.
Insurance & Fees
Do you accept insurance?
Yes. I am in-network with several major insurance plans including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Florida Blue, Optum, UHC, and others. See the Rates page for a complete list.
What if my insurance isn't accepted?
I can provide a Superbill (itemized receipt) that you can submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many PPO plans reimburse 50–80% of out-of-network therapy costs. I also offer a sliding scale for clients with demonstrated financial need.
How much does a session cost?
Individual sessions are $150 for 50 minutes. EMDR sessions are $175 for 60–90 minutes. Couples sessions are $195 for 60 minutes. Sliding scale spots are available — ask.
Do you offer sliding scale fees?
Yes. I reserve a small number of sliding-scale spots for clients who demonstrate financial need. Please mention this when you reach out — I don't want cost to be a barrier to getting help.
Therapy & Approach
What types of therapy do you use?
My primary approaches include EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, and mindfulness-based techniques. I tailor the approach to what fits you best.
How long does therapy take?
It depends on what you're working on. Some people find significant relief in 8–12 sessions. Others work with me for a year or more, going deeper over time. We'll set goals together and regularly check in on progress.
Is everything I say confidential?
Yes — with a few legal exceptions. I'm required to break confidentiality if you disclose intent to harm yourself or others, if child or elder abuse is revealed, or if I receive a court order. Outside of these situations, everything stays between us.
Do you prescribe medication?
No. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I provide psychotherapy only. If medication may be helpful, I'm happy to coordinate with your primary care provider or refer you to a psychiatrist.
What if I've tried therapy before and it didn't help?
That's actually a common experience — and it doesn't mean therapy can't work for you. It often means the fit wasn't right, or the approach didn't match your needs. Tell me what's been tried and what didn't work. That information helps me calibrate.
Still have questions?
I'm happy to answer anything before you commit to a session. Reach out — it's completely free and no-pressure.
